Piering supports the foundation from below

Here's how it works:
- A hole or trench is dug next to the foundation to a depth slightly below that of the basement floor.
- Support brackets are attached to the foundation where it meets the basement floor.
- Piers are placed deep into the ground below the brackets, then attached to the brackets.
This method has a distinct advantage over concrete underpinning in that the weight of the structure is supported by bedrock instead of the soil that has already failed.
