A sump pump might be your last line of defense against basement flooding. Once a drainage system has collected water, the pump removes the water from your basement and your house.

A sump pump system generally is set in the basement floor (or in a crawl space) at the end of a drainage system or other water drainage spot. The location typically is near a basement wall, because the pump lifts and pushes any water outside through a pipe, hose or other device.
Contractors place the sump pump itself in a basin, or liner, which can range from a simple bucket to a specially designed container. Experienced contractors then will place clean gravel or stone around the liner to catch debris or mud to avoid troublesome clogs.
The size of the liner is important. Basins that are too small and hold little water force the pump to switch on and off repeatedly, wearing out the machine.
Liners that are too deep also can tax the pump. They make the pump draw up more water than necessary to keep the basement dry.

The final step – removing water Where does the sump pump send the water? Typically, the pump moves the water in pipes or hoses through the wall of your house to the ground outside. Those discharge lines are the final pieces in the sump pump system.
Generally, each sump pump should discharge to a single line – unless two pumps will never be working at the same time. Water flows from two pumps typically will not fit through a single discharge line, and a back-up is likely to occur.
(However, a battery-powered pump used during outages can share a line with an AC-powered pump, because both will not be running together.)
Frozen water can become wintertime danger leading to backups in sump systems. In frigid temperatures, water from a sump pump can freeze in the discharge line and close it off.
