A few days later, Derek traveled to the home to begin the thorough inspection and the radon test. After Derek arrived, he started by beginning a radon test. When the installation date arrived, our Foreman, Jackson, traveled to the home to begin the installation. First, Jackson and his crew started by securing the Radon Mitigation System outside the home. Once the exterior section was secured, the crew shifted to securing the interior section. Once both sections were secured, the crew cleaned up their matierals and left the home. Radon is a naturally occurring radioactive gas that has become the second leading cause of lung cancer. Naomi R. in Norwood Young America, MN learned that radon kills over 20,000 people each year and she realized that they had not had their home tested yet. Naomi had used us in the past to repair her foundation and had a pleasant experience, so she contacted us again to have her home tested for radon. One of our Design Specialists, Jeremy Radtke, went to her home to set up the radon test and give her a free estimate. Our production team installed the radon mitigation system by inserting a PVC pipe through her sump pump which creates a suction point for the gas. The PVC pipe runs up the house and through the roof. There is a fan installed at the top of the PVC pipe to ensure that the gas is pushed out and away from the home. After each installation, we do a second radon test to ensure that the radon mitigation system is working properly and expelling the radon from the home. The second test reported that Naomi’s home now had significantly lower levels of radon. Our Foreman, Dakota Merchlewitz, started the installation process by drilling a hole in the slab foundation of the home and connected a PVC pipe. Robert K. of Albert Lea, MN got his home tested for radon and his levels came back at 19.5 pCi/L. The Environmental Protection Agency requests that homes with above 4 pCi/L must take action right away. So, Robert did, and he called American Waterworks to set up an appointment after finding out we provide services for Radon Mitigation. Our Foreman, Geno, and his crew member started the installation by drilling a hole in the basement concrete floor, forming a suction point. The purpose of doing this is to pull radon out from underneath the home. From there, our team connected PVC piping until they got to the house exterior, where they installed the Radon Mitigation System. The system is the heart of the system. If the system isn't working, then radon is not escaping from the home. From there system, our team connected PVC piping along the siding of the home until they got to the roof, which is where radon escapes into the open air. Robert said our team was clean, they explained everything well, and they were very professional!

A homeowner from Albert Lea, MN, was chatting with his neighbor one day when he learned his neighbors had their home tested and mitigated for radon gas. The homeowner didn't know much about the dangers of radon gas but decided to find a specialist in the area to ease his concerns. When he found our website, he was impressed with the previous radon systems we had installed in his area and decided to claim his FREE estimate. When Brad headed out to the home, the first step in his process was to place a continuous radon monitoring test in the lowest level of the home. Brad explained that the point of the test is to record the levels of radon in the home over a 48-hour timeframe, and at the end, deliver the average level of radon within the home. Brad went on to say that if the test came back with a level higher than 4 pCi/L, he would strongly urge the homeowner to consider installing a radon mitigation system. Brad explained that a typical radon mitigation system consists of a large-diameter plastic pipe that connects the air beneath your foundation to the outdoors. An in-line fan sucks radon-rich air from beneath your foundation and expels this hazardous air to the exterior. Instead of entering your basement or other living space area through numerous gaps and cracks in the foundation, radon gas is extracted from beneath your foundation before it can permeate into interior space. The homeowner liked the sound of Brad's plan but decided to wait until the radon results returned. When the test results came back, they were well above the recommended 4 pCi/L, so the homeowner and Brad worked together to find the right date for the installation.
